I’ve had a few messages asking why no articles lately. In truth, many of the major regeneration schemes are on the back-burner at present limiting my content, so I’ve written something of a lament on the state of affairs. But in fairness, a few things have moved forward, and the council issued a new town centre strategy a couple of months back, so let’s be positive and lead with that even if it’s old news (it was barely covered). They published two new documents: a vision and high level plan. There’s some positive ideas and intent there, let’s take a look… But first you’ll have to endure that lament…

Gladman proposes 1200-home Caversham extension

As part of the local planning process, new documents from prospective developers have been published on Reading council’s website. It appears the new materials were made available in May, so it’s with apologies that it took me so long to get round to clicking the link to “2 of 6 Regulation 19 representations F-to-K.pdf“. If you scroll down to page 81 you’ll find a sub-document submitted by Gladman entitled “Play Hatch & Emmer Green – A vision for land North of Reading”. We’d seen reference to this title before, but I think this is the first appearance of the document in the public domain.

Bowl Central, Caversham Road

A new tenant has been announced for the former Dawson’s Music shop on Caversham Road. Subject to licensing and planning, “Bowl Central” would be the third venture for the south-coast operator and would feature “Pins & Prizes” – aka bowling and arcade games.

Caversham Park – Blue Sky Thinking

Last year it was announced that the BBC would vacate the 1850-built Caversham Park house, where its foreign media monitoring service is based, and sell off the estate.  This week it emerged that the council and the BBC are in dispute over a “Tree preservation order” covering the site.  The council has dug in meaning the BBC cannot start clearing the site in an attempt to maximise the appeal to any developer.
